WHY I'M RUNNING

I’m running because Kitchener deserves strong regional representation that is practical, accessible, and focused on results. I believe residents want leadership that listens, asks tough questions, protects taxpayer dollars, and still cares deeply about the people who need help the most.

A New Approach to Housing

Waterloo Region needs practical new tools to help address housing challenges, and I believe a Municipal Housing Corporation can be part of that solution.
I am committed to helping move this work forward. I have been connecting with other municipalities, learning from their experience, and gathering ideas that can help guide the development of a strong and effective model here in Waterloo Region. My focus is on making sure we do this thoughtfully, responsibly, and in a way that delivers real results for our community.

My priorities centre on people, affordability, and the long-term well-being of Waterloo Region. They reflect the issues that matter to me and guide how I approach discussions and decisions at Regional Council.

Housing and Affordability: Housing options that reflect different needs, incomes, and stages of life.
Homelessness and Community Well-Being: A compassionate approach to homelessness and the challenges facing vulnerable residents.
Health and Access to Care: The importance of accessible healthcare, mental health services, and community supports.
Income and Food Security: The ability to meet basic needs and participate in community life. I will advocate to the provincial government for a Basic Income Guarantee to help reduce poverty and improve income stability.
Water and Environmental Protection: The long-term health of our drinking water, farmland, green spaces, and natural environment.
Responsible Growth and Infrastructure: Thoughtful planning that considers growth, existing neighbourhoods, infrastructure needs, and quality of life.
Transportation and Connectivity: Safe, accessible, and practical ways for people to move throughout the region.
Indigenous Relationships and Reconciliation: Respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, grounded in listening, learning, and meaningful dialogue.
Local Democracy and Public Participation: Transparent decision-making, local voices, and opportunities for residents to help shape their community.
Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Opportunity: Careful consideration of taxpayer dollars, reliable public services, and a healthy local economy.

What Regional Council Does

Joe Gowing is running for Regional Council to stand up for residents and make sure the Region delivers on the basics: responsible spending, strong infrastructure, safe communities, reliable transit, housing that keeps pace with growth, and protection of our long-term water supply. As our communities continue to grow, residents deserve a councillor who will listen, ask hard questions, and push for decisions that reflect the real needs of the people who live here.
